I know I have previously said that I am “allergic to white paint”.

But dang it! Sometimes it’s just the RIGHT COLOR to go with, ya know????

We just finished painting this dresser and I want to tell you how we did it!

I recently got to work with the At Home Store to do some decorating. I had decided that I would decorate the top of this table for the holidays.

But while I was playing with styling it, I realized how much I disliked the blue color dresser with our new gray and cream carpet.

And with our wall color.

In another room this piece would have been beautiful, but the “chippy” distressed pattern was just too much for me on our new carpet too.

So I decided to paint it.

I dug out my FAVORITE off-white paint color: French Vanilla and chalktype paint brush. (Both available on Amazon). I use this color on everything. I used it on THIS mini blind project and THIS painted fabric project. I go thru French Vanilla paint like some families go thru milk.  For real!

And I slapped some paint on one drawer one morning while my entire family was sleeping.

A dropcloth may or may not have been used.

And yes, the handle was still on. You don’t need to remove handles to test colors. Seriously.

And for those of you who ask if I “get a vision in my head of how something will look”? No.

I get an impulse to paint. And I follow it.

Even at 5:30 a.m.

I liked how the one drawer looked, so I had the girls who paint for me at The Magic Brush removed all the handles and whipped it out proper. All off-white.

And then we sanded all the edges of the drawers and detailed areas.

Notice the drawers are still IN the frame while we are working on it.  Because ain’t nobody got time (or room) to be taking drawers out of the frame. Just slap the paint on my friends. No need to make it more complicated than it needs to be.

And also notice that the drawer is still full of 3rd grade art projects from my now 7th grader. I don’t empty drawers either. I am kind of a rebellious furniture painter. Lol.

We sealed the dresser with a water based topcoat – Modern Masters MasterClear in Satin. I am not a fan of wax no matter how much people try to get me to love it. But you can’t leave chalktype paint CLEARCOAT-LESS. It’s thirsty. It MUST have a sealant. Apply it with the same brush. So fast and easy!

And here is how the piece turned out.

It’s much more calming on this carpet.

And the sanded back detail still gives it some interest.

I love the peeks of the original blue coming thru!

I will tell you that this top was a light wood when I bought it. I used THIS FINISH to darken it. (This is the same finish we use on cabinets too! You can get that video 40% off if you use the coupon PROJECT).

I love how it turned out!

Sometimes, less is more. While the piece was gorgeous and wild before, it died on the carpet.

But I feel like it sings now.

If you have a piece in your house that is bugging you, it may be time to slap a new paint color on it! Let me know if I can help?

And, would love it if you pinned the images below!

xoxo,

Jen
