Faux Columns Interior - Jennifer Allwood The Magic Brush

When we moved into our house there were two round columns in the dining room that were super heavily textured and the irony is that my team is who textured those very heavily nine years ago. When we hired the people to come in and get rid of the faux finishing and textured walls, we asked them to also smooth out our two columns.

Upon trying to do that, they discovered that you can’t smooth out a round surface very easily.

Our Interior Faux Columns Options:

  • Just paint them and leave them very heavily textured
  • Take them out and having a trim carpenter build columns from scratch for us

This next picture will show you what we decided ….

So Mr. Magic took the columns out with our friend Richard, and he basically cut the columns off of the support beams that were inside of them like you cut a cast off somebody’s broken arm. He cut those off and took them straight to the trash.

Watch how easy these faux columns come off!

Here are the support beams naked! It opens up the space nicely but they aren’t staying like this….

The trim carpenter came in and did a little mockup of what the columns could look like so I could see if I liked the size of them and the size of the trim.

I liked it.

He built them and the painters painted them in Sherwin Williams Alabaster.

They’re in front of our dining room and they just go with the decor of the home so much better than the round columns did. The square faux columns look modern while the wainscoting trim work gives it a classic look. They are also not as distracting as the old ones.

And, by the way, I take back everything bad I ever said about the color white.

We painted the dining room is in SW Naval —  the same navy that we used in our Master Bedroom and bathroom. Just loving it!

( PS if you’re looking to pick out some new paint colors, download free list of my favorite 50+ paint colors here. )

This furniture was in my breakfast nook in the previous house and looked like this. You can find links to the furniture and the mirrored buffet that I painted there too.

And because you’re going to ask, here is my affiliate link for the Pig Portrait just peeking out in the back. Should he stay there???? What do you thinK?

Stay tuned for more of the Allwood home renovation!

XOXO,

Jen
