Every time I do this silver faux finish and post it on my Facebook page, you all go ga-ga!!!! It’s gorgeous, isn’t it??
(This post may contain affiliate links that help support my DIY blog. I only blog about products I use and love!)
We do this silver furniture finish over and over on bedroom furniture and I am going to tell you how to do it today!
First, you will need to prep your furniture by cleaning, using a liquid deglosser or TSP on it and sanding the pieces well. The better the prep, the better the durability… so, take your time on this!
Then, I have the the paint store tint a latex primer appropriate for furniture to a color similar to Sherwin Williams “Latte”. Roll that on with a mini mohair roller like this one.
Next, we paint the silver furniture with Modern Masters Warm Silver. It’s a silver….but like the name implies, it’s warm. So sometimes it looks champagne almost….truly beautiful!! We use the lowest nap roller we can find in the 4-inch size. You can also use a mini mohair roller like this one. Try not to overwork the rolling or you will see lap lines because it’s metallic. Chip the crevices and roll everything you can. It will probably take 2 coats of metallic for perfect coverage!
Let dry.
Next, we glazed over the entire thing with a black glaze. I own a decorative painting company so I had some black glaze already mixed up that I used. You could use Modern Masters Black Pearl color mixed with this Furniture Glazing Cream. Apply the glaze and then be sure to wipe the glaze back a bunch so it just sticks mainly in the cracks. We use cheesecloth to do all of our wiping.
The glaze is what gives the silver furniture finish all of the dimension!!! See how it hangs up in all of the detailing? I love it!
Finally, if you want great protection for your furniture, I suggest Modern Master’s Masterclear in a satin sheen! It’s an awesome topcoat! Expensive but totally worth it. We call it liquid gold. It will protect your furniture for years and years to come.
We often spray the original furniture pulls/handles with black primer and black spray paint.
And it always turns out gorgeous!!!
The nice thing about this silver furniture finish is that it’s appropriate for a tween’s bedroom furniture…..
Or, this set was for “grown ups”.
Isn’t the detailing on this silver bedroom set unbelievable??
Drooooooooooool.
This silver furniture finish is not ONLY for furniture by the way. It is also stunning on fireplaces, ceiling medallions, picture frames, etc. It’s very versatile!
I have a graphic for you below to pin if you want!
Happy painting!
Jennifer
This finish would be great for an old Cracker Barrel door turned hiback seating bench I built this summer. It has a light base coat of paint and has just been patiently waiting in my garage for inspiration to make it beautiful.
Love the metallics. I have a bedroom I’d love to do!
I have been looking for something to give me this finish….beautiful! This is perfect for my nightstands. Happy Holidays to you and your family.
Just stated using Modern Masters paint and wouldn’t you know, warm silver and Black Pearl are my two FAVES! I need to try the glaze!!
Love the pieces, the look glamorous!!
LOVE that finish! I have a dresser I wanted to do in silver but wasn’t sure which product to go with. Now I do! Thanks for the giveaway.
Hi. I just wanted to let you know that I found that same chest. You should check out what I did with it. I love the metallic look!!!

Thank you so much for this. I’ve been searching for a way to create this look: http://www.pinterest.com/pin/407435097510444272/
and I think you’ve got it. Warm is the trick. Since I’m a total amateur I don’t know what “chip the crevices” means. I know what crevices are though! It doesn’t google so would you please enlighten? Thank you, many blessings.
I think she means paint with chip brush.
We are trying to finish our furniture, but not sure how to mix the clear glaze with the metalic black. What is the proportion? Thank you
Do you have to sand all the way back down to the wood?
This paint is absolutely stunning & beautiful. As soon as I saw it I went down to my local Sherwin & Williams (Ormond Beach,Fl) and they had no clue what I was talking about. The sales associate said he’d never even heard the name? Ugh such a disappointment. But I’m trying some local stores too that Modern Masters Paint might be sold. Fingers crossed.
Ps your work is gorgeous. Thank you for the inspiration.
That is crazy! Sherwin Williams Latte is a very popular color. SW6108 Latte
Have you tried doing this as the Modern Masters “Shades” in the Warm Silver.
It just means mixing the Warm Silver 50% with the Black Pearl 50%…. Insead of glazing with the black.
I’m just wondering if the final result would be similar.
Hi, thank you so much in making me want to finally decorate my home how i visioned it. I just came in from doing my first project. I want to paint my daughters small bookshelf in grape purple, so i primed it first. Is it normal to finish a WHOLE can of primer on a small bookshelf or did i go overboard?
What foam roller do you use?
Cindy says to use a micro fiber 4inch roller, you can get these at any paint store. They come in 2or 4packs you will need to buy a 4inch roller handle also, but they are a great tool to have on hand for any project ! you don’t want foam paint nap will fly everywhere the micro fiber doesn’t shed and has a small nap so paint will go on quickly and evenly!
Where do you purchase Modern Masters paint?
Amazon.com Sold a table I did using this technique in 3 days in a shop. Just bought an old desk for the next one.
You can use Jennifer’s affiliate link to order directly from Modern Masters! http://shop.modernmasters.com/?os=TMB101 or from Amazon at http://amzn.to/2oRZDNa. I hope that helps!
~Vicki at The Magic Brush
most ben moore stores have it,amazon also has modern masters paint!
How much Black Pearl color do you mix with the glaze? Would it be easier to just use a black glaze?
Your silver finished furniture is gorgeous. I wish that I had read your post before I repainted my daughter French bedroom furniture. I ended up painting it turquoise with silver pulls but I couldn’t use the big double dresser because that would have been too much turquoise. Your silver technique would have been perfect. I will definitely try it on another piece in the future.
I never saw where she replied to anyone’s comments ?
Can you tell me the mixing ratio of the glaze and cream? Thank you!
Your link for the MasterClear Satin is incorrect, the topcoat for Metallic Paint Collection should always be MasterClear Satin ME664, not the MasterClear Supreme MCS902.
can you make this into chalk paint?
Can someone please tell me where to buy the ADULT furniture pieces. They are exactly what I am looking for
This is absolutely FABULOUS!!!!!!! Its making me hyperventilate. Thank you so much.
Do you put the black glaze on the parts of the furniture that is flat? Like the sides or drawer fronts?
Do you know of anyone in Vegas that can paint some furniture for me
Wow! It is really good Article regarding furniture. Thanks for sharing this post.
I also picked up this same match set I first painted it black n highlighted every thing with a silver was beautiful now I’m doing it with a pinck chualk with a soft gold wax witch I love love love
