We had the honor of transforming the brick this fireplace for a client recently. Julie loves her fireplace but was tired of the red in the brick and wanted to keep the brick looking authentic and not painted.
So I fiddled with products and with techniques until I figured out a look that we all liked.
And it ended up that we used these 2 products.
First, Jen covered the brick in 80-90% Grizzle Gray from Sherwin Williams.
Then, Stephanie came behind her and added a little Ebony Stain and Seal that you can order online on my affiliate link HERE.
They “smooshed” the 2 colors together and ragged off a little as needed so that there was still DEPTH to the brick.
Here is a closeup. Still looks like real brick, doesn’t it?
In this picture you can see the bottom is done and the hearth is not. Huge change, isn’t it??
And viola! Here is the after!
This was a day project that anyone can do!
We have another post on painting a whitewash brick here and how to update your brass fireplace surround here.
XOXO

JUST FOR YOU! I have a more ideas for updating your home HERE.
Please sure my black brick fireplace on Pinterest!
Omg !! Love it ????
Wow! Love it! But I do wish there was a little more variation! But love it!
I like the before.. I am sooo over this gray and black look…But I am sooo glad the home owner loves it.
I really like how this turned out! It’s nice to see a treatment other than whitewashed brick. Thanks for linking up with our Merry Monday party!
I love this! I want to update my fireplace and I think this might be the winner. Did you do something to the mortar? It looks so much lighter in the “after” picture.
I like it, gud
What does the 80-90% coverage in the paint mean? Was it diluted?
I want to know as well!
I would really like to do this and need to know too!
Yes would like to know what 80-90% means & is there another product to get locally without the crazy shipping cost?
So did you let the grizzle gray dry first before adding the stain, or did you apply the stain while the paint was still wet?
How did you keep the mortar look? I am considering doing this same thing. I want the mortar to stay existing. I love what you have done!!!
I’d like to also know what the 80-90% means as well as when and how you applied the stain. Also, did you paint the mortar? It looks beautiful!
Thank you
That stain and seal link doesn’t work. Any other recommendations?
