DIY Christmas Chalkboard Sign | The Magic Brush

One year I made a bunch of little chalkboards like this to give away on my Facebook page and for teacher gifts! It was so fun!

These little Christmas chalkboard signs are super, super easy and can totally be modified to fit any season or holiday. You just need a few supplies!

I started with these old framed pictures from the thrift store. Seriously….. I collect these all throughout the year and stash them for when I need them. I look for 2 things in my framed prints:

  1. are they glass-less? You don’t want glass in them.
  2. is the frame cool? It’s all about the frame really!!!

Then I painted all of the frames in a red paint that I had on hand. If I were to do it again, I would use this red right here.  It’s the same red I used on this pallet project and on this “O Come Let Us Adore Him” sign.   It’s the most yummy of the reds I have found. Also, get one of my favorite chalk-type paint brushes — these oval tapered brushes are amazing when using chalk-type paints.

After the frames are painted and dry, I taped them off and primed them with gray primer. Primer sticks well to the slick prints.

Then,  I prefer to use “Black Bean” chalk-type paint from Heirloom Traditions for my chalkboards.

It will take 2 coats and dry like a dream!

I always try to do something fun with my chalk holders. You can see some other examples on this post.  For this project I bought these Christmas clothespins at Hobby Lobby. They make great chalk holders!

I literally hot glued the chalkholder on the frame!

I stapled and hot glued the ribbon to the back of the frame for easy hanging.

And I found this cute Christmas ornament at Hobby Lobby as well. It was not this color but I went over it with a gold metallic and added some gold to the inner trim of the  Christmas chalkboard sign.

And it’s all done! See? An easy DIY gift idea!

I was wondering the same thing….where are your painting or what are your painting with the chalkboard paint? I have done the glass thing and it works but also is streaky…nothing compared to like a real chalkboard.
